All Door-to-Door Solicitors must be licensed by the Borough of Closter/Closter Police Department and must have their Borough issued Solicitation Permit with them when soliciting. The Police Department will maintain a Do Not Knock list of registered addresses.
Door-to-door solicitors may not approach any address on the Do Not Knock list. It is the responsibility of the solicitor to obey the Borough's regulations and abide by the "Do Not Knock" list. Canvassers may obtain the "Do Not Knock" list after receiving an approved Solicitation Permit from the the Closter Police Dept.
Please note the following advisements regarding Door Knock activities:
Non-commercial, religious, and/or political canvassers and solicitors protected by the First Amendment to the US Constitution are permitted to perform those activities from 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. on weekdays and weekends. These groups, such as political campaigners or religious advocacy groups, are not bound by the rules stated in the Borough's Do Not Knock Ordinance.
In addition to joining the Do Not Knock list, the Borough of Closter advises residents who are concerned about the manner in which they have been solicited to reach out directly to the companies in question and/ or file a complaint with the Better Business Bureau or Division of Consumer Affairs.
