Mayor’s Message 2024

Welcome to Closter !

It is my pleasure to invite you to explore some of Closter’s resources which, in addition to its residents, makes Closter a superb place to call home or to sustain a business. Our town is a suburban residential community conveniently located west of the Hudson River between the Tappan Zee and G.W. Bridges allowing for a commute to Manhattan or Westchester in less than an hour. Closter is home to highly acclaimed Blue Ribbon schools, six parks, state-of-the-art athletic fields and playgrounds, and a youth recreation program second to none in Bergen County

Closter is pleased to be home to a large newly renovated state of the art shopping plaza. It boasts several major anchors including Whole Foods, Target and Home Goods. In addition, there are new dining establishments which include, Bareburger, Brasserie Memere, and Chipotle. There is a new Theater with six screens, a kitchen and bar facility. There are several new exercise studios, numerous boutiques, a major liquor store and more to come.

Closter has one of the most comprehensive public libraries in Bergen County. The Belskie Museum  of Arts & Science is a gallery of 3000 square feet that is host to national and international exhibits. The Closter Nature Center is an oasis in the middle of suburban Closter with 136 acres of ponds, brooks, meadows and forests. The center provides informative monthly lectures and nature walks for the general public, as well as school or scout groups.  Closter’s commitment to maintaining open space includes the MacBain Farm on Hickory Lane where residents can pick current produce.

Closter is proud of its spirit of volunteerism, evident by the number of organizations and community groups that call Closter home. Most notably are our emergency service organizations, the Knickerbocker Hook & Ladder Company and the Closter Volunteer Ambulance & Rescue Corp,   which provide emergency fire and ambulance services through the sole dedication of volunteers.   The spirit of volunteerism is evident in the innovative Challenger programs designed for students   with special needs. The numerous volunteers who manage the Borough’s Boards and Commissions as well as many volunteer organizations, such as the American Legion 111 Leroy Mead Post, B.P.O.E. Elks Post 2304, Closter Lions, League of Women Voters, Boy and Girl Scouts, represent   the community as a whole.

Closter as a community is a leader in the area of Shared Services between municipalities. We are regularly taking the lead to reduce our costs by sharing municipal services with our surrounding neighbors.

Our web site is a comprehensive resource for obtaining information on special events and announcements, as well as accessing borough offices, familiarizing yourself with borough codes     and ordinances and downloading forms specific to residential and commercial projects and voter registration to name a few. Through this web site you can register for direct text or email notification in the event of emergencies or to receive information about special events.

Welcome to Closter !   Please join us in protecting what we have and improving our community.

Sincerely,

John C. Glidden, Jr.
